Cow Drinking
1680
Nicolaes Berchem transports us to a romanticized Italian countryside, a favorite fantasy for Dutch artists of the Golden Age who rarely traveled that far south. A massive, vine-choked ruin dominates the left side, providing a dramatic backdrop for a chaotic watering hole where cows, goats, and sheep crowd the stream. On the right, a lanky shepherd leans on his staff, overseeing a group of figures resting in the shade, creating a perfect balance of nature and humanity. The intricate line work captures every bristle of the goats' coats and the rough texture of the ancient stones.
