Orfeo en desesperación

Odilon Redon

ca. 1885 - 1890

Orfeo en desesperación by Odilon Redon, ca. 1885 - 1890

Odilon Redon captures the ultimate moment of heartbreak in this haunting sketch. The mythological musician Orpheus leans against a tree in agony, his hand clutching his head in despair after looking back and losing his beloved Eurydice forever. At his feet lies a discarded lyre—the instrument he used to charm the underworld—now useless. If you look closely at the bottom, Redon actually wrote out musical notes and the French phrase 'J'ai perdu mon Eurydice' (I have lost my Eurydice), turning this visual sketch into a literal song of grief. It’s a perfect example of Symbolism, where the dark, scratchy mood matters far more than realistic detail.
