Cicada on tree

Ohara Koson

Cicada on tree by Ohara Koson, 1900 - 1936

Ohara Koson was a master of kacho-e (bird-and-flower prints), capturing the tiny, often overlooked moments of nature. In this piece, a giant cicada clings to the textured bark of a weeping willow, its detailed wings standing out against the sweeping, delicate green leaves. Koson was a star of the shin-hanga movement, which revived traditional Japanese woodblock techniques to create serene, atmospheric prints that Western collectors absolutely loved in the early 20th century. He was so popular in the US that he often signed his works with different names—Koson, Shoson, or Son—just to satisfy different exporters!
