Coucou au croissant de lune
1900 - 1930
Ohara Koson was a master of kacho-e, the Japanese genre of bird-and-flower prints, and this piece captures a cuckoo in mid-flight with incredible grace. The bird soars dynamically across the sky, its wings spread wide against a giant, glowing crescent moon that dominates the upper left corner. With its beak open, the cuckoo seems to be calling out, perhaps singing a nocturnal song into the quiet night. Koson's delicate prints were hugely popular in the West during the early 20th century, helping to spark a global fascination with Japanese nature art.
