Cuculo sotto la luna crescente
1900 - 1930
Ohara Koson, a master of the kacho-e (bird-and-flower) genre, captures a cuckoo in a dramatic dive against a stark crescent moon. The bird's beak is open in a call, its wings spread wide to show off the detailed feather patterns typical of Koson's meticulous style. Created during the early 20th century, these prints were hugely popular exports to the West, helping to fuel the Japonism craze in Europe and America. Koson was incredibly prolific, designing over 500 bird prints, making him one of the most celebrated animal artists of the shin-hanga movement.
