Neerdalende adelaar

Ohara Koson

1900 - 1930

Neerdalende adelaar by Ohara Koson, 1900 - 1930

Watch out below! Ohara Koson captures a majestic eagle in a terrifyingly fast dive, slicing through a sheet of diagonal rain. This piece belongs to the shin-hanga (new print) movement, where artists blended traditional Japanese woodblock techniques with Western-style realism and anatomy. Notice how the sharp, diagonal rain lines create a dizzying sense of speed, making the bird look like it's plummeting straight at the viewer. Koson was a master of kacho-e (bird-and-flower pictures), and his incredibly detailed studies made his prints huge hits in the West, often exported to Europe and America.
