Fliegende Gänse by Ohara Koson, 1900 - 1930

Ohara Koson was a master of 'kacho-e' (bird-and-flower prints), brilliantly blending traditional Japanese woodblock techniques with Western-style realism. Notice how the two geese in the foreground are rendered with incredible detail—look at those textured feathers and pink beaks—while the flock behind them fades into ghostly silhouettes against the mist. That giant, glowing moon anchors the composition, creating a dreamy sense of depth that feels almost cinematic. Koson helped revitalize traditional printing in the early 20th century through the Shin-hanga (New Print) movement, making his serene nature scenes incredibly popular in the West.
