Habicht mit Sperling
1900 - 1930
Ohara Koson was the undisputed king of bird prints, and this dramatic scene shows his predatory precision. A fierce hawk perches on a snow-dusted pine branch, casually clutching a tiny sparrow in its talons like a fresh snack. The moody, muted grey background makes the intricate feather patterns pop with incredible detail. Koson helped lead the shin-hanga movement, a modernist revival of traditional Japanese woodblock printing that blended Eastern aesthetics with Western realism. Fun fact: although he is a Japanese icon today, his early prints were actually mass-produced for export to Europe and America, where Western collectors went wild for his nature scenes.
