단풍나무 위의 홍여새
1900 - 1930
Ohara Koson was a prolific master of shin-hanga (new prints), a movement that revitalized traditional Japanese woodblock art in the early 20th century. Here, a Japanese waxwing with its signature crest perches delicately on a gnarled branch, gazing up at vibrant red maple leaves. The composition uses vast negative space to highlight the bird's soft feathers, a classic technique in kacho-e (bird-and-flower) prints. Koson designed hundreds of these nature scenes, which became wildly popular exports to the West, adorning homes from Paris to New York.
