Ohara Koson, a master of the shin-hanga (new prints) movement, captures the serene grace of two koi fish gliding through water with just a few delicate, wavy blue lines. Rather than filling the entire frame, he leaves a vast expanse of negative space, a classic technique in Japanese art that emphasizes the quiet, meditative nature of the scene. Koson was incredibly prolific, designing hundreds of bird and fish prints that became wildly popular in the West during the early 20th century, proving that sometimes the simplest subjects make the most striking masterpieces.
