Oiseau chanteur et lotus

Ohara Koson

1900 - 1936

Oiseau chanteur et lotus by Ohara Koson, 1900 - 1936

Perched delicately on a lotus stem, this tiny bird seems to be inspecting the magnificent pink bloom with great curiosity. Ohara Koson was an absolute master of 'kacho-e'—the Japanese genre of bird-and-flower prints. He captures the soft, velvety texture of the petals and the sturdy, speckled stems with incredible precision. This piece is a classic example of the Shin-hanga movement, which took traditional woodblock techniques and gave them a fresh, naturalistic twist that Western collectors went absolutely crazy for in the early 20th century.
