麻雀 by Ohara Koson, 1900 - 1930

Imagine a tiny acrobat trying to solve a puzzle: that's the vibe of this sparrow balancing on a wooden board, peering down at bamboo tubes spilling seeds like a waterfall. Ohara Koson was a superstar of *kacho-e* (bird-and-flower prints), famous for capturing the quirky, everyday lives of animals with incredible detail. The delicate, swirling grass suggests a gentle breeze, grounding the bird in a peaceful natural setting. Although created in the early 20th century during a modernist revival of traditional styles, these prints were hugely popular exports to the West, bringing a slice of Japanese nature to homes worldwide.
