Due oche
1900 - 1930
Ohara Koson was a master of kacho-e, the Japanese genre of bird-and-flower prints, and here he captures two white geese with hilarious personality. One goose stretches its long neck skyward like a periscope, while the other seems to be honking loudly at an invisible rival. Created during the Shin-hanga ('new prints') movement in the early 20th century, Koson's work revived traditional woodblock techniques but added a touch of Western-influenced realism. His charming animal prints were actually more popular in Europe and America than in Japan during his lifetime!
