Dois cães brincando

Ohara Koson

1900 - 1930

Dois cães brincando by Ohara Koson, 1900 - 1930

A fluffy grey-and-white puppy scrambles up the side of a wooden box, its back turned to the viewer, while a white companion peers over the edge with mouth wide open in a playful bark or snap. Ohara Koson, a Japanese artist celebrated for his lifelike animal art, captures the texture of their fur and the dynamic energy of the scene with incredible delicacy. Created in the early 20th century, this work fits into the modernism movement in Japan, specifically the Shin-hanga style which revitalized traditional art. The vertical signature on the right marks it as a piece by this master of nature studies.
