Madonna and Child
1503-40
Parmigianino died young at 37, but he packed a lifetime of stylistic innovation into those years, becoming the master of the 'elongated aesthetic.' In this sketch, he uses bright white highlights over a brownish surface to make the figures practically glow, as if a spotlight is hitting the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. Their faces are pressed close together in a moment of pure intimacy, almost nose-to-nose, which was a daringly human way to depict holy figures during the Mannerist period. It feels less like a stiff religious icon and more like a tender, private moment captured in light and shadow.
