De wandeling
1871
Before Paul Cézanne became the famous 'father of modern art' known for his geometric apples, he painted this moody scene of two women pausing during a stroll. Dressed in heavy, voluminous Victorian fashion—one in deep emerald green, the other in pale grey—they look almost like statues planted in a garden. The standing woman holds a blue parasol that seems to battle the cloudy sky, while the seated figure clutches a closed orange umbrella. You can already see Cézanne’s unique style emerging here; he treats the folds of their dresses like solid blocks of architecture rather than soft fabric, hinting at the geometric revolution he would soon lead.
