Mont Sainte-Victoire by Paul Cézanne, ca. 1902-6

Paul Cézanne was absolutely obsessed with this rugged mountain near his home in southern France, painting it over sixty times before his death. Instead of capturing a fleeting moment like the Impressionists, he broke the landscape down into bold, blocky brushstrokes of blue, green, and ochre to show its underlying geometric structure. This radical approach to seeing the world completely changed the course of art history, directly inspiring Picasso and the birth of Cubism. It is a masterclass in looking at nature not just as it appears, but as a solid, timeless architecture.
