Paisaje
1862-1864
Look at how much empty space Cézanne left on the page in this early landscape sketch from the 1860s! Before he became the famous 'father of modern art' with his chunky, colorful apples, a young Cézanne was out here scribbling trees with graphite and dabbing quick watercolor washes of green and yellow. It feels like he was rushing to capture a fleeting moment in the woods, letting the white paper do half the work. This loose, unfinished vibe shows us exactly how he was experimenting with form and light long before his style fully matured.
