Unterholz (Unter den Bäumen)

Unterholz (Unter den Bäumen) by Paul Cézanne, circa 1882-1884

Cézanne’s 'Sous-bois' feels less like a finished painting and more like a whispered memory of a forest walk. Instead of dense foliage, we see ghostly tree trunks rising like pale pillars, framing a canopy where sky peeks through in soft, dreamy washes of blue and pink. This is Post-Impressionism at its most experimental—Cézanne wasn't trying to copy nature perfectly, but rather to capture the structural rhythm of the woods. He often left his watercolors looking this airy and open, letting the white of the paper do the heavy lifting to create a shimmering, unfinished atmosphere that influenced generations of modern artists.
