The Cardplayer by Paul Cézanne, between 1890 and 1892

Paul Cézanne was obsessed with capturing the quiet intensity of everyday life, and this solitary card player is a perfect example. Painted during his Post-Impressionist phase, the man is hunched over his hand, completely absorbed in the game. Notice how Cézanne builds the figure not with smooth blending, but with thick, blocky patches of brown and blue paint, almost like he's sculpting with a brush. He painted a whole series of card players, using local peasants as models, aiming to make Impressionism something 'solid and durable' like the art in museums.
