The Card Players by Paul Cézanne, 1890-92

Cézanne turned a simple game of cards into a monumental study of focus and geometry, reportedly paying local peasants to pose for him for hours to get it right. Notice how the men look almost like statues, hunched over the table in deep concentration, while a fourth figure stands in the back smoking a pipe. The artist used blocky, parallel brushstrokes to build up the forms, making the figures feel solid and permanent. This is actually one of five versions he painted, showing his obsession with getting the composition just right before he moved on to simpler two-figure versions.
