Noanoa Pl.25
Gauguin reimagined the biblical Annunciation during his self-imposed exile in Tahiti, swapping traditional robes for tropical pareos. In this scene, a barefoot Tahitian woman carries the Christ child on her shoulders while two local figures greet her with clasped hands, surrounded by lush foliage and bananas. This specific image is a color plate from his famous journal 'Noa Noa,' documenting his life in the South Pacific. The original oil painting, titled 'Ia Orana Maria' (Hail Mary), brilliantly fuses Catholic iconography with Polynesian culture and now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
