Winter Landscape
1885
Although Paul Gauguin is famous for his bold Symbolist works in Tahiti, this 1885 piece shows him deep in his earlier, Impressionist phase. 'Paysage d’hiver' captures a chilly, windswept French landscape where bare, spindly trees reach into a pale, swirling sky. The loose, vibrating brushstrokes reveal the heavy influence of his mentor Camille Pissarro, making the ground look like it's shimmering with color. It’s a fascinating, quiet glimpse of the artist long before he abandoned these muted tones for the tropical sun.
