Two Marquesans
circa 1902
Far from the Parisian salons he despised, Gauguin created this raw sketch during his final years in the Marquesas Islands. The rough, dark strokes capture the profiles of two local figures with a tender, almost ghostly intimacy, reflecting his obsession with finding an untouched paradise. It is a poignant glimpse into his last chapter, where he sought refuge from civilization but found himself increasingly isolated and ill before his death in 1903.
