Old Steamboat

Old Steamboat by Paul Klee, 1922

Paul Klee created this whimsical 'Old Steamboat' in 1922, right after he started teaching at the famous Bauhaus school. Instead of a realistic ship, he drew a skeletal, geometric vessel that looks like a toy made of wire and boxes, complete with cage-like smokestacks and wheels. The soft pink and blue background looks like a watercolor reflection, making the boat seem like it's floating in a dream rather than the ocean. Klee famously said, 'Art does not reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see,' and this playful sketch is a perfect example of his imaginative style.
