Ascending City Section
1930
Paul Klee constructed this cityscape block by block in 1930, treating the surface like a musical score where colors play the notes. The title, Ansteigender Stadt-Teil, translates to 'Ascending City Part,' and you can see the buildings literally climbing up the page, shifting from dark, heavy earth tones at the bottom to lighter, airier blues and greens at the top. Created during his final years teaching at the Bauhaus, the piece reflects his belief that art should mimic the creative process of nature and architecture. It feels less like a realistic skyline and more like a dream of a city, turning a simple urban view into a puzzle of vibrant, textured squares.
