Castle on the Reef
1927
Paul Klee's 'Burg auf dem Riff' (Castle on the Reef) looks like a child's dream of a fortress floating on a deep blue ocean. Created in 1927, this piece reflects Klee's unique blend of Expressionism and abstract geometry, using simple triangles and squares in soft pinks and greys to build a fragile-looking city. The massive block of deep blue sea at the bottom makes the colorful, jagged settlement look tiny and vulnerable, as if a single wave could wash it away. It's a perfect example of how Klee turned simple lines and colors into poetic, musical landscapes during his time teaching at the Bauhaus.
