Colorful Architecture
1917
Paul Klee built this vibrant, blocky cityscape in 1917, right in the middle of World War I, perhaps as an escape into a more orderly, colorful world. The geometric shapes—triangles for roofs, rectangles for walls—stack up like a child’s toy blocks, yet the muted, earthy tones mixed with bright blues and yellows give it a dreamy, almost musical rhythm. Klee famously said, 'Color and I are one,' and here he proves it by turning simple architecture into a playful puzzle of hues. It feels less like a real city and more like a memory of one, filtered through a kaleidoscope.
