Der Sauerbaum

Der Sauerbaum by Paul Klee, 1939

Paul Klee created this whimsical, biomorphic composition in 1939, just a year before his death. Titled 'Der Sauerbaum' (The Sour Tree), the piece features bulbous, cloud-like shapes outlined in thick, dark lines against a wash of soft pastel blues and pinks. Created during his late period while battling a severe illness, Klee's style became bolder and more simplified, almost returning to a childlike simplicity. The yellow dots scattered throughout look like strange, glowing fruits hanging from this imaginary, abstract tree, showcasing his unique blend of abstraction and playful imagination.
