Doktor by Paul Klee, 1930

Paul Klee’s 1930 'Doctor' looks less like a medical professional and more like a primitive wooden puppet brought to life. The figure features a blocky, rectangular torso and a reddish, mask-like face with a simple T-shaped nose, hallmarks of the Expressionist movement which favored emotional impact over realistic detail. Notice the left arm? It tapers into a sharp, needle-like point—likely a surgical tool—while the dense horizontal hatching of the background mimics wood grain. Created during his time teaching at the Bauhaus school, Klee often used a deceptively simple, childlike style to explore serious themes, making this doctor appear both ancient and strangely modern.
