ゲンミ峠、ヴァレーアルプス

ゲンミ峠、ヴァレーアルプス by Paul Klee, 1895

Before Paul Klee became the king of abstract art, he was a teenager trying to figure out how to capture a mountain range. This 1895 sketch of the Gemmi Pass in the Swiss Alps is basically his visual notebook. Look closely at the bottom, and you'll see him labeling the landscape with German notes like 'NAH' (near), 'FERN' (far), and 'NEBEL' (fog). He was literally mapping out depth and atmosphere, proving that even geniuses start by studying the basics of perspective!
