Upward
1939
Created in 1939 during the final year of his life, this piece by Paul Klee reflects his late style, which became increasingly simple and symbolic. Titled 'Nach oben' (Upwards), the composition uses thick, dark blue outlines to frame abstract, hill-like shapes against a textured, washed-out blue background. The title is deeply poignant; suffering from a terminal illness, Klee was literally and metaphorically looking 'upwards' toward the end of his life. The work feels like a map of a fantasy landscape, capturing a spiritual ascent rather than a physical place, blending Expressionist emotion with a childlike simplicity.
