Whitley-Bomber in der Sonne
1940
Paul Nash, a key figure in British modernism and an official war artist, captures a rare moment of tranquility in 1940 with this depiction of Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bombers. He personifies the heavy machinery, titling the piece 'Sunning' as if the camouflaged plane on the ground is a giant lizard basking in the heat, while its companion patrols the turbulent, cloud-filled sky above. Nash was famous for treating war machines as living entities, and here he uses soft watercolor washes to turn a deadly bomber into a strangely peaceful, almost organic form resting on the airfield.
