Paul Sérusier

Visitação by Paul Sérusier

Paul Sérusier, a rebel of the Post-Impressionist world and founder of the Nabis group, completely ditched realistic 3D depth to create this striking biblical scene. Instead of a traditional painting, it looks more like a medieval tapestry or a stained-glass window, with flat blocks of color and bold outlines telling the story of the Visitation. You can spot Mary in her white robe being greeted by Elizabeth, while an angel curiously peeks through a wooden door, all under a banner of ancient text. It's a perfect example of how these late 19th-century artists looked way back to the Middle Ages to find a fresh, spiritual way to paint.
