Lezardrieux by Paul Signac, c. 1925

Paul Signac, usually famous for his meticulous dots of color, lets loose here in a breezy watercolor sketch of the French coastal town Lezardrieux. The loose pencil lines and washes of blue and green capture the bright light hitting the white buildings and the wooden pier structure in the foreground. It feels like a visual diary entry, likely painted quickly from his sailboat as he explored the Brittany coast in the 1920s, showing a much freer side of the Post-Impressionist master.
