Segelboote im Hafen
Paul Signac is best known for Pointillism—painting with tiny dots—but he was also a passionate sailor who captained his own boat for decades. This sketch reveals his other side: a quick, energetic study of a ship in port, likely done in a sketchbook during his travels. Instead of rigid dots, he uses loose, scribbly lines and brown wash to capture the movement of the water and the sturdy hull of the vessel. The wobbly reflection at the bottom is a brilliant touch, making the whole scene feel like it's gently rocking on the waves.
