Birch Tree in a Landscape
1899
Paula Modersohn-Becker captures the raw, rustic beauty of the German countryside in this early Expressionist study. Two towering birch trees with stark white trunks dominate the foreground, their thick, textured bark rendered with heavy, deliberate brushstrokes that almost leap off the surface. To the left, a smaller, autumnal tree stands in contrast against a muted blue sky and flat, greenish field. Painted in 1899, this piece hints at the bold, simplified forms that would define her short but brilliant career before her tragic death at age 31.
