Still Life with Green Vase
1900-1905
Paula Modersohn-Becker was a trailblazer of early Expressionism, and you can see her bold, revolutionary style in this vibrant still life. Instead of perfectly realistic flowers, she uses thick, chunky brushstrokes to create a lively bouquet bursting from a bright green vase. The swirling, almost chaotic patterns on the tablecloth beneath it give the whole scene a dreamy, energetic feel that breaks away from traditional, stiff still lifes of the time. Sadly, she died at just 31, but her fearless use of color and simplified forms paved the way for modern art.
