Assumption of Mary

Assumption of Mary by Peter Paul Rubens, circa 1616-1618

Rubens throws us right into the middle of a heavenly elevator ride! Mary, draped in vibrant red and blue, floats upward toward a burst of divine light, surrounded by a chaotic, joyful swarm of cherubs holding crowns and palm fronds. Down below, the apostles are huddled around her empty tomb, craning their necks and reaching out in sheer disbelief. This is the Baroque style at its finest—full of movement, intense emotion, and dramatic lighting designed to make the viewer feel the spiritual awe of the moment.
