Die Zeiten

Die Zeiten by Philipp Otto Runge, 1802-05

Philipp Otto Runge dreamed big with his ambitious 'Times of Day' cycle, a project meant to capture the cosmic cycle of human life through the metaphor of a single day. Look at that central stem shooting up like a giant, mystical lily, holding clusters of cherubs and figures who rise toward the sun labeled '1803' at the top. Runge, a German Romantic who corresponded with Goethe about color theory, believed art should be a total spiritual experience, framing this scene with tall, stylized plants and angels like a religious altarpiece. Sadly, he died at just 33, leaving this grand vision incomplete, but the architectural precision of these lines still feels like a blueprint for heaven.
