Andrée con cappello, che legge
c. 1918
Feathery brushstrokes bring to life a young woman completely absorbed in her book, bathed in the warm, dappled light of a summer afternoon. Painted around 1918 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, the subject is Andrée Heuschling, his final favorite model who would later marry his son, the famous film director Jean Renoir. Notice how the vibrant pinks of her floral hat and cardigan melt seamlessly into the lush green background, a hallmark of his signature Impressionist style. Remarkably, Renoir created this incredibly tender and luminous portrait while suffering from severe rheumatoid arthritis, having his brushes strapped to his swollen hands to keep painting.
