绿瓶中的花卉 (Fleurs dans un vase vert) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, c. 1912

Renoir’s late-life masterpiece bursts with energy, featuring fluffy chrysanthemums and roses that seem to vibrate against a warm, rusty-brown background. Although the title claims a green vase, the container appears as a striking deep teal, anchoring the composition. Painted around 1912, this work reflects the artist's struggle with severe rheumatoid arthritis; his brushstrokes became looser and more 'feathery' as he had to adapt his grip, sometimes having brushes tied to his hands. Flowers were his preferred subject in these years because, as he famously noted, they were cheap models that didn't complain!
