Natura morta (Due mele) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, circa 1900

Pierre-Auguste Renoir captures the simple, tactile beauty of two apples in this intimate still life from around 1900. Instead of hyper-realistic detail, he uses thick, textured brushstrokes to build up the warm reds and oranges of the fruit, making them look almost good enough to eat. Even in his later years, when many artists were moving toward stricter, more classical forms, Renoir maintained that signature loose, vibrant energy. It’s a wonderful reminder that the Impressionist master could find just as much joy and light in a couple of ordinary fruits as he did in his famous bustling dance halls.
