Portrait of Jeanne Samary
circa 1879
Renoir was completely smitten with Jeanne Samary, a popular actress at the Comédie-Française, and painted her several times to capture her sparkling personality. Here, her face glows with a soft, rosy warmth against a deep, moody burgundy background, typical of his Impressionist style. The brushstrokes are loose and feathery, making her skin look luminous and her expression feel incredibly lifelike, as if she’s just paused mid-conversation. It’s a perfect snapshot of Parisian charm in the late 19th century.
