Esquisse de paysage du Midi
1910
Renoir created this vibrant landscape sketch after moving to the sunny south of France, seeking relief for his severe rheumatoid arthritis. The loose, feathery brushstrokes capture the dappled sunlight filtering through the lush trees, with a glimpse of the Mediterranean coast and white houses in the distance. Despite his hands becoming increasingly deformed, he refused to stop painting, eventually having brushes tied to his wrists to keep working. The title 'Midi' refers to this southern region, which became his colorful, sun-drenched refuge in his final years.
