Standing Bather
c. 1910
Renoir was absolutely obsessed with painting bathers, creating over a hundred of them throughout his career! This particular piece shows a woman standing in a lush, vibrant landscape, her back turned to the viewer as she holds a sheer, patterned cloth around her legs. Painted around 1910, late in his life when severe arthritis was making it painful to hold a brush, Renoir still managed to capture the soft, glowing flesh tones and dappled light that made him famous. The loose, feathery brushstrokes blend the figure seamlessly into the colorful, dreamy background of greens and blues.
