Farmhouse Facade
1906-1907
Before he became the king of grids and primary colors, Piet Mondrian spent years painting moody, atmospheric landscapes just like this one. Created around 1906, 'Boerderijgevel' (Farmhouse Facade) shows a rustic cottage with a heavy thatched roof nestled among windswept trees. The thick, slashing brushstrokes reveal an artist deeply influenced by Impressionism, completely hiding the rigid geometry he would later become famous for. It is a fascinating glimpse into the artistic evolution of a man who would eventually strip away all nature to find pure abstraction.
