바벨탑 (로테르담)
circa 1563-1565
Bruegel's massive tower spirals skyward like a Roman colosseum on steroids, its lower stone levels giving way to crumbling red brick at the top. Inspired by his visit to Rome, the artist packed this biblical scene with tiny workers, ships in the harbor, and a dramatic cloudy sky. The story comes from Genesis—humanity tried to build a tower to reach heaven, and God scrambled their languages to stop them. Bruegel painted this around 1563, and you can spot the artist's signature sense of humor in the chaotic, never-ending construction site.
