Supper at Emmaus by Pontormo (Jacopo Carucci), 1525

Pontormo’s 1525 take on the biblical Supper at Emmaus is a wild ride of Mannerist style, ditching realistic proportions for something much more dreamlike and crowded. Jesus sits calmly in the center under a glowing 'Eye of Providence,' breaking bread while his disciples look startled, almost like they’ve just seen a ghost. Look closely at the bottom corners—there’s a little dog and a cat peeking out, adding a touch of everyday chaos to this holy scene, while monks in the background watch the whole thing unfold with intense, almost suspicious expressions. It’s a perfect example of how Mannerism loved to twist traditional religious scenes into something psychologically tense and visually surprising.
