宾多·阿尔托维蒂

Raphael

c. 1515

宾多·阿尔托维蒂 by Raphael, c. 1515

Raphael captured the striking gaze of a young Roman banker in this 1515 portrait, giving him the kind of dreamy, soulful look usually reserved for religious figures. Notice how the subject turns back over his shoulder, his long, wavy blonde hair cascading beneath a sleek black beret. The rich blue drape over his shoulder contrasts beautifully with the dark green background, making his face pop with an almost ethereal glow. It’s said that Bindo Altoviti was so vain he commissioned this piece specifically to show off his good looks, and honestly, looking at those piercing eyes, you can't really blame him!
